As I prepare to teach my third year at Dordt Discovery Days, I’m absolutely thrilled! But I need your help.

I can’t wait to introduce young photographers to the magic of capturing the world through a lens. I hope this experience ignites a deeper passion for photography and encourages them to explore beyond the basics, like it did for me. I’m eager to push them to think creatively, experiment freely, and be amazed by their own artistic discoveries. Most of all, I’m excited to help them see photography as more than just snapping pictures—it's about telling stories, evoking emotions, and creating meaningful connections.

In the wise (and slightly mocking) words of my son—“Back in my day…”—I look back at my own journey with photography, remembering how much learning, growth, and experimentation shaped every image along the way. I still hear the words I first encountered when picking up a camera: “Just take pictures.” I took that to mean—don’t overthink it. Keep shooting, keep exploring. Some shots won’t work, but some will be unforgettable. And sometimes, the beauty in everyday objects rivals even the most extravagant scenes.

Here is where I need your help! I’m looking to borrow or buy a few extra cameras—point-and-shoot or DSLR—for a week to help teenagers get hands-on experience with photography. If you have an old camera lying around that you’re not using, I’d love to give it a temporary home and put it to great use!

The goal is to help them explore photography beyond their phones and understand how different cameras work. If you have something available or any leads, feel free to reach out.

Happy National Awkward Moments Day! 🫣 Today we celebrate all those times we’ve waved back at someone who wasn’t waving at us, told the server to “enjoy their meal too,” or called someone the wrong name for way too long. So, embrace the awkwardness—it builds character... or at least makes for a funny story later! What's your most awkward moment? If you dare to share, you're in good company today! 😊

Nothing too wild comes to mind as a mortifyingly awkward moment for me. There are those times when a newborn pees on me, and it somehow looks like I was the culprit. Or the moments working with extended families, accidentally pairing siblings as a married couple. And let’s not even get started on the random things that pop into my head—or out of my mouth—while photographing kids.

Nothing too wild comes to mind as a mortifyingly awkward moment for me. There are those times when a newborn pees on me, and it somehow looks like I was the culprit. Or the moments working with extended families, accidentally pairing siblings as a married couple. And let’s not even get started on the random things that pop into my head—or out of my mouth—while photographing kids.

Happy St Patrick's Day! A while back, my niece asked me what my 2nd favorite color was, and I was taken aback - why not ask about my 1st favorite color?! So I say, "Well, my first favorite color is green...", and she's all, "Yeah, of course. I know that." 😆 I guess I'm pretty predictable! But then I keep going, saying how much I LOVE green - there are so many shades, and they're basically my top 15 colors! 🤣

2024 Gallery Wall is finished! As per usual, I am totally obsessed.

This wall means so much to me.
It brings me joy in seeing all the sweet faces I've had the privilege of photographing over the year.
I love seeing kids come in and try to find themselves on the wall and the way they light up about it.
I feel proud of the work that has gone into this business.
I see growth.

1 Week away from Valentine's Day!

A few years ago, we started a tradition on Valentine's Day. We put on a Fancy Candlelight Dinner for our kids. I hope it is something they look forward to because I know I do.

A few years ago, we started a tradition on Valentine's Day. We put on a Fancy Candlelight Dinner for our kids. I hope it is something they look forward to because I know I do.

I mean, do you see those cheeks?

I've talked about this subject recently with some Moms of Newborns. It is hard to actually show in pictures. but this is a great of an example of Baby-led newborn sessions.

First off, I start by saying no newborn session looks or flows the same. Because no baby is the same.

The whole time during a newborn session, I am learning from the baby. I am adapting to what the baby will respond to, what will soothe them, what they like or don't like, are they hungry, or just need to snuggle, and the list goes on. It is also a delicate balance of speed while they are sleeping. Not too fast as to jostle them out of slumber or not let them settle in, but not too slow to make the most of their relaxed and sleepy state.

This little Lady's Mom came in and said she was having an off day, a little fussy, gassy, and just out of sorts. Hoping we can get a few good pictures.

We started by just snuggling for a bit, she took a paci, was able to relax, and I went to work on a few poses. And let's just say she did amazing. She was able to take a paci during some of the transitions and really settle into each new position.

I was able to get quite a few different poses in before she needed a little snack break. After some milk, she was able to relax right into the poses again. She would have a wave or two of tummy discomfort but was able to soothe back to sleep.

This combination of paci, milk, snuggles, patience, and listening to her was what she needed and wanted. I've had others similar to this and others completely different. Some want me to snuggle. Some will only snuggle with mom. Whatever it is, I listen!

*I want to start by saying that I have been back and forth about whether to post this or not. I'm sharing not because what I will describe later has happened but as a precaution.

This time of year is full of sickness. It is everywhere! And with kids, they seem to pick up everything.

With that being said, (*in the nicest tone possible) I don't want your kids in the studio if they are sick.

There are many parts to this. First, kids don't really want their pictures taken when they aren't feeling well. Smile might be harder to come by, if at all. Next, I don't want to get sick. I like sharing, but sickness isn't one of them. I see several little tiny babies throughout the week and would hate to pass anything to them or their family members. Reach out to me, and I will be more than happy to reschedule your appointment!

Along the same line, but the flipside, I also understand, hey, Boogers can be for no reason, the rash of their cheeks is from teething, or this cough has been lingering for weeks. That is totally fine. Use your best judgment or reach out to me if you have questions.

I really hope this isn't coming across too mean or aggressive. I want to deliver the best images possible. I want to keep not just myself but my family and my clients healthy too.
